On April 5, 2010 President Obama threw out the ceremonial opening day first pitch at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., continuing a tradition that started over 100 years ago. President William Howard Taft began the custom on April 14, 1910 at Griffith Stadium, Washington, D.C. Earlier in the day President Taft delivered a speech to a large contingency of Suffragists at their annual convention, and after being booed by them, was no doubt thankful to be at the ballpark among friends. Through the years, members of the baseball community have shared a friendship with America’s chief executive on and off the field.
