Title: Oil portrait of Thomas Jefferson

Description: This portrait was painted while Thomas Jefferson was Vice President under John Adams. Jefferson was the first president to be inaugurated in the city of Washington. He was also the first president to entertain on the South Lawn of the White House, holding musical Fourth of July celebrations there, and starting a long-time tradition. Since Jefferson’s wife died before he took office, his daughter, Martha Randolph, served as the hostess of the President’s House. Her child, James Madison Randolph, was the first child to be born in the White House.
